Dental veneers can be an effective solution for crooked, chipped, or discoloured teeth
- cover chips and cracks
- eliminate gaps between teeth
- conceal stains on your teeth
- give crooked teeth a straighter appearance
Veneers can be applied to both your top and bottom teeth. Because they are fabricated using porcelain, they can be colour-matched to your natural teeth. An additional benefit of porcelain is it’s translucency. It is similar to natural tooth enamel, which can give you a natural looking tooth.
How long does it take?
The process takes two treatment visits.
During the first visit, your teeth will be prepared. Even though the veneer material is very thin, some enamel must be removed from the fronts of your teeth to accommodate the thickness of the veneer. After this step, temporary veneers are bonded to your teeth to protect them while your final veneers are being fabricated.
When your final veneers are ready, you’ll be invited back for phase two of your dental veneers treatment. This is when you’ll try-on your new veneers. Once you’re satisfied with the look, they’ll be bonded into place.
The entire process usually takes about one month to complete.

Try them on first
Since dental veneers are an irreversible treatment, the process usually starts with what’s called a “wax up”. This is a model of what your smile will look like after your veneers are bonded to your teeth. Kind of like a taking a test drive before you purchase an automobile, the wax up allows you to visualize what your final smile will look like prior to going ahead with your treatment.
During this smile design process, the final shape, colour, texture, and proportions of your new smile are discussed with you in detail. You can have as much input as you wish on how your final smile will look. Some people want a dramatic Hollywood smile. Others wish a more subtle smile that is not overly daring.
Lethbridge dentist Dr Lachman and the dental lab technicians use your wax up model as a blue-print to follow as your dental veneer restorations are prepared.
Are dental veneers for you?
If you have cracked, chipped, crooked, gapped or stained teeth, dental veneers could be a cosmetic dental treatment option for you. Before you commit to the treatment, you’ll need to to have an examination to determine the health of your teeth.
- If you have any tooth decay or if gum disease is present, you’ll need to have these problems treated first.
- If too much of the enamel is missing, or if too much of your tooth is missing, a dental crown may be a better treatment option.
